Roy Bubb '53/'62

Roy Bubb ’53/’62 just released his latest book, Among the Giant Pines: The Century Old Houses of Silver Lake, which details historic homes nestled among the woods near his New Hampshire cottage. Life as an author began for Bubb nearly a half century after he graduated from the College when he penned Memories of Manning Corners: History of the Bubb Family and its Neighborhood 1931-1942, a retrospect on growing up in nearby Orleans County.

Bubb always dreamed of being an author, but the warm and witty former Brockport faculty member has a good reason why it took so long for him to complete his first work.

“I always wanted to write books but never had time,” he says. “When you’re done teaching for the day and correcting papers, who could write a book? I can’t. Maybe somebody else can.”

Bubb retired from Brockport in 1986 after 25 years of service to the College. He was dedicated to providing the best possible learning environment to future teachers. He even co-created a simulation program in the late ‘60s that received recognition from the National College Association.

His gift to Brockport goes well beyond the classroom. Prior to retiring, he established the Roy Bubb Award, which is administered by the Department of Education and Human Development.

“I just felt we should recognize teachers in the field who work with our student teachers by giving them an award,” he says.

Bubb also played a direct role in securing two additional scholarships for the College. The Ella Potote Ashworth Departmental Scholar Award honors an outstanding senior with exceptional performance in his or her college years. Additionally, the Charles J. Ashworth Memorial Scholarship recognizes an outstanding student in the Department of Business Administration and Economics.

Proceeds from Bubb’s books benefit both the Madison Historical Society in Madison, NH, and the Clarendon Historical Society in Clarendon, NY. His second book, Visions from a White Mountain Palette: The Life and Times of Charles A. Hunt: Madison’s White Mountain Painter, has already generated more than $14,000.

Bubb and his former Brockport classmates recently had a chance to celebrate their 60th reunion. He feels the Class of ’53 shares a special connection that grows over time.

“My great love of family and friends means a great deal to me, and I think that happens as you get older,” says Bubb. “That’s why coming back to see these old friends means so much to me now.”

When asked what it meant to be back at the College celebrating his 60th reunion, the 2010 Brockport Alumni Association Hall of Heritage Award recipient was unflinching.

“Oh Dear God, I feel blessed that I made it!”
